Abramovich’s Clash With UK Government Over Chelsea Sale Funds Takes New Twist

A Jersey inquiry into whether the money earned from Roman Abramovich’s sale of Chelsea constituted “proceeds of crime” may have an impact on a legal dispute between the UK government and Abramovich.

According to the Mirror, accounts for Fordstam Limited, the business Abramovich used to buy Chelsea, reveal that the Channel Island authorities were investigating a loan to Fordstam from another Abramovich business, Camberley International Investments Ltd.

The accounts said that money from the club’s sale might be used in that probe.

“From judgments published by the Jersey Court in November 2025, it is understood that the funds provided by Camberley International Investments Limited may be affected by an ongoing criminal investigation initiated by the Attorney General of Jersey, into whether certain assets (potentially including the net proceeds) amount to the proceeds of crime,” the Fordstam report stated in a section titled ‘Principal risks and uncertainties facing the company’.

Abramovich denied any misconduct. However, the ongoing legal dispute between Abramovich and the UK Government regarding the use of the funds earned from the 2022 sale—which are presently frozen in a UK account—may be impacted by the Jersey inquiry.

Numerous media sites have reported that Abramovich’s legal team has maintained that the funds are his to distribute however he pleases.

According to the government, funds must be ringfenced before being used in Ukraine.

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said in response to the Abramovich letter: “This money was promised to Ukraine over three years ago.

“It is time Roman Abramovich does the right thing but if he won’t we will act.”
