Man United Eye Goalkeeper In Possible 22-Year First Transfer

Manchester United are reportedly targeting Leeds United goalkeeper, Karl Darlow ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to talkSPORT, United are seeking for a homegrown goalkeeper to take Altay Bayindir’s place as back-up to Senne Lammens.

Darlow won Leeds’ No. 1 spot last season and played 24 games after snatching the shirt from summer signing Lucas Perri.

He established himself as a regular starter in the second half of the Premier League season and helped guide the team to safety in the top division.

The 35-year-old conceded 27 goals while keeping five clean sheets in his 22 league games.

The Wales international’s contract at Elland Road expires at the end of June, and his outstanding performances throughout an exceptional campaign have already attracted interest from a big club.

Every Premier League team must include at least eight home-grown players in their 25-man squad.

Darlow would assist United in keeping that number joining veteran Tom Heaton in the goalkeeping lineup.

Darlow To Break 22-Year Transfer Barrier

If Darlow completes his transfer to United, it will be the first time a player from Leeds has joined the club in 22 years.

Leeds and United have a long-standing rivalry, and they have only occasionally concluded deals together.

The last player to join the Red Devils from their rivals was Alan Smith, who moved to Old Trafford in 2004.

Smith signed a five-year contract with United in a £7 million transfer, while Danny Pugh made the opposite move.

The next most recent move was Rio Ferdinand’s £29 million transfer from Leeds to Manchester in 2002.

In 1992, Eric Cantona also made similar move; the only other players to do so were Arthur Graham, Gordon McQueen, and Joe Jordan.
