Garnacho’s Move To Chelsea Goes From Bad To Worse As World Cup Dreams Crushed

Alejandro Garnacho has reportedly been cut from Argentina’s preliminary squad, ending his hopes of winning the World Cup.

According to the Mirror, the former Manchester United player last played for the defending world champions before joining Chelsea last summer.

After earning his debut in the summer of 2023, 21-year-old Garnacho was a regular in the national team. The winger made one appearance at the Copa America the following year.

Since then, he has only made two appearances, totaling three during World Cup qualifiers. But this summer, Garnacho won’t add to his eight senior team caps.

Lisandro Martinez, his former teammate at United, is included. The other Premier League players that have earned their spot are Alexis Mac Allister, Cristian Romero, Emiliano Martinez, and Enzo Fernandez.

Garnacho, Mastantuono Out Of Argentina World Cup Squad

The forward with the highest cap from the first list to be left out is Garnacho. Real Madrid forward, Franco Mastantuono is another major absence.

He has half as many caps but all of them since Garnacho’s previous call-up 18 months ago.

Emiliano Buendia will watch the competition from home as well. This is true even though he had a stellar season for Aston Villa and received his second senior cap in November, nearly four years after his first.

The other forwards that were not selected were Claudio Echeverri, Gianluca Prestianni, Mateo Pellegrino, Matias Soule, Santiago Castro, and Tomas Aranda.

Giuliano Simeone, Nicolas Gonzalez, Julian Alvarez, and Thiago Almada were among the half of those selected who were players for Garnacho’s former club, Atletico Madrid.

Argentina will be led by Lionel Messi to his sixth World Cup. Their attacking options are completed by Palmeiras forward Jose Manuel Lopez, Inter’s Lautaro Martinez, and former Real Madrid academy product Nicolas Paz, who now plays for Como.
