ESPN presenter Dan Thomas was compelled to issue an apology after shockingly implying on live broadcast that Mikel Arteta’s actions against Atletico Madrid justified a punch.
The 45-year-old was part of the American broadcaster’s panel that covered the second leg of the Champions League semi-final, which saw Arsenal win 2-1 on aggregate. Bukayo Saka scored the game’s lone goal on Tuesday at the Emirates.
Even though the Gunners proved to be the better team and advanced to the final, where they will play PSG, Thomas thought Arteta’s touchline behaviour deserved a “punch,” and fans denounced the presenter on social media.
According to Football London, the ESPN presenter was subsequently compelled to apologise. He said: “I just want to make reference to something I said yesterday, an off-hand comment that landed literally.

“Obviously, it was not intended to land that way. I’ve thought about it today and I could have phrased it in such a better way.
