Manchester United’s managerial search has taken another twist after former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell backed Unai Emery as a serious candidate to take charge at Old Trafford.
United are once again looking for stability following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, with Michael Carrick appointed as interim manager until the end of the season.
Speaking amid ongoing speculation, Campbell suggested the club now needs a proven figure capable of handling elite-level pressure rather than another high-risk appointment.
According to the former England international, Emery fits that profile perfectly after his impressive work at Aston Villa, reports GOAL.
The Spaniard has transformed Villa into consistent European contenders, earning praise for his tactical organisation, squad management and calm leadership.
“I honestly think United need someone who can appease those above and also show the fans they’re in safe hands,” Campbell said. “Someone like Unai Emery at Villa — that’s a possibility.”
Emery’s Big-club Experience Appeals To United Decision-makers
Campbell believes Emery’s experience at top clubs and in high-pressure environments makes him a strong option for United’s hierarchy.
While his Arsenal spell was mixed, Emery has since rebuilt his reputation by winning the Europa League with Villarreal and overseeing Villa’s resurgence.

Campbell also addressed other candidates, dismissing Jurgen Klopp as unrealistic due to his Liverpool legacy, while questioning whether Thomas Tuchel’s abrasive personality would suit United’s dressing room.
For now, Carrick has the opportunity to impress, with Campbell suggesting the interim boss could follow Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s path if results improve.
However, Emery’s name is now firmly in the conversation as United attempt to escape what Campbell described as a recurring “loop” of failure.
