Manchester United have taken another major step in their managerial rebuild after reportedly reaching an agreement with a new head coach, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now set to miss out on a permanent return to Old Trafford.
United are searching for a long-term successor following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim just 14 months into his reign.
The decision was made after club chiefs felt the Portuguese coach had reached his limit, with his explosive press conference after the Leeds defeat proving the final straw.

Darren Fletcher will take charge of Wednesday night’s Premier League clash away to Burnley, acting as a short-term solution while the club finalise plans for the future.
Solskjaer has been heavily linked with an interim role until the end of the season, but reports suggest INEOS are unwilling to revisit the Norwegian as a long-term option.
United lean towards fresh direction
While Solskjaer’s understanding of the club and previous top-four finish made him an appealing caretaker choice, United’s hierarchy are keen to move in a new direction permanently.
A number of high-profile candidates have been discussed internally, including Zinedine Zidane, Roberto De Zerbi, Enzo Maresca and Oliver Glasner.
Sources indicate an agreement has already been reached in principle with a preferred candidate, with the club prioritising tactical flexibility, authority in the dressing room and a clear long-term vision.
United are also conscious of avoiding another short-term appointment that could stall progress, reports Express.
An interim manager may still be appointed until the summer, allowing the club to make a smoother transition.
However, Solskjaer is now expected to be overlooked as United prepare for a fresh era under new leadership.
With pressure mounting from supporters and results faltering, Manchester United’s next managerial decision could define the club’s immediate future.
