Former Liverpool players Pep Lijnders and James French have joined Manchester City ahead of the Club World Cup.
Lijnders, Jurgen Klopp’s former right-hand man at Anfield, has been officially hired as Pep Guardiola’s new assistant coach at the Etihad Stadium, while French, who was still at Liverpool, is now the club’s set-piece specialist.
The pair replace Juanma Lillo and Inigo Dominguez, who will both leave City at the end of their contracts. Carlos Vicens, another of Guardiola’s aides, left last month to become manager of the Portuguese club Braga.

“We are all delighted that Pepijn and James have joined our senior coaching team,” said City’s football director Hugo Viana. Reported By Liverpool FC.
“Pepijn and James have both gained extensive experience working in their respective roles over the last few years.
“Their talent, application, work ethic, and overall devotion are completely consistent with Pep’s vision for how football should be played.
“And I have no doubt at all that both will prove to be very important assets for Pep and his coaching team as we prepare for the Club World Cup and then the 2025/26 season.”
Lijnders continued at Liverpool as Klopp’s assistant until last year, when he left the club to pursue his dream of returning to management, although he only lasted seven months before being fired by Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg in December.
