Continuing his outstanding form at the conclusion of the previous season, FC Barcelona defender Eric Garcia has started the new season well, appearing in all three opening games of the 2025-26 La Liga season.
His consistency and versatility have once again proven crucial to Hansi Flick, as they did at the close of last season, when Jules Kounde’s injury allowed him to finish the season as a regular starter.
Despite his importance, his long-term future at the Blaugrana club remains uncertain, particularly given that his contract expires in 2026. Recently, there have been allegations that the Catalans are looking to begin discussions to lock him down for several more years.

MARCA reported that the defender provided an update during an interview with Jijantes. The former Manchester City center-back confirmed that negotiations for his new deal have already begun.
“Everything will be addressed shortly. We’ve started talking about a renewal. Captain? Who knows, maybe in the future I’ll be considered for captaincy?”
Garcia also commented on Barcelona’s season opener, which included a hard-fought draw at Vallecas:
“Last year, we started worse; Monaco put three past us at the Gamper. We have grown, we are a young team, and all three games have been played away from home.
On his personal performances, the defender emphasized his adaptability:
“I have always been a centre-back, but I am also comfortable at full-back.”
The Spaniard also addressed the surprising departure of experienced centre-back Inigo Martinez, who just left the Catalan club:
“We trained for a couple of days after returning, and on the second day,” he explained. It was unexpected, but he has every right to do what is best for him. He will be missed on the pitch, but now it is up to the young players to take up.”
